Thank you to everyone who was involved in the tropical ecology meeting held in Leeds last week, by all accounts it was an outstanding success. Participants came from as far a field as the Universities of Mainz and Wuerzbug (Germany) and South Bohemia (Chez Republic). Particularly strong contingents were present from Leeds (9 participants), Oxford (9) and Edinburgh (5), and in all twenty one different institutions were represented. Talks revealed the wide spectrum of tropical ecology research being conducted. These ranged from self organising plants, through dung beetles to pollen grains; for full list of papers presented see web site (www.besteg.org). The diversity of talks made for an exceptionally interesting meeting and I certainly gain new insight in to the weird and wonderful ways in which tropical ecosystems function. The standard of talks was high, across the board, and debate was lively both immediately after the talks and during the ‘social’ time.
I hope that everyone who attended enjoyed the experience and that it generated enthusiasm and collaboration opportunities for further research.
In addition, I would like to thank the BES who sponsored the event and part funded many students to participate.
The preliminary venue for this meeting next year is Oxford so please take a moment to a answer the few feedback questions below as this will help future planning (please send e-mail responses to me, w.d.gosling@open.ac.uk). I hope very much that we can begin to make this a regular fixture in the academic calendar…
Any further ideas for TEG events or events that you think the TEG should be involved with let me know.
Thanks again to all who participated!
Will
