Nouragues Research Station, French Guiana
French Guiana is a privileged region for developing research projects in biodiversity, systematics, conservation, ecology, biogeochemistry, and evolutionary biology. In 1986, the Nouragues Research Station was established in an undisturbed forest of central French Guiana to study the dynamics of plant and animal populations, including frugivory and pollination. The station is a permanent field equipment of the Centre
National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, France). All field facilities are available, housing, food supply, electricity, laboratory space, and satellite internet access. The Station is over 100 km from the nearest
village and can only be accessed by boat or by helicopter. For more information, see http://www.nouragues.cnrs.fr
In 2008, the CNRS (http://www.guyane.cnrs.fr) is funding a Call for Proposals to encourage projects at
the Nouragues Station. Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and established scientists may apply. Each year, the Science Advisory Board of the Nouragues station will evaluate the projects based on
the excellence of the proposed research, the quality of expected publications, and the feasibility of the
project. Funded projects will not exceed 10,000 euros in total, and they will be awarded for the year 2008,
with a possibility to reapply in 2009, if needed. Reapplications will be evaluated based on the achievements of the previous years. Grant recipients will be expected to provide a scientific and financial report by December 15th, 2008.
Grants will cover all expenses by the participants, including airflight costs, housing in Cayenne, and transportation to the Nouragues Station. Laboratory analyses, personnel costs, and equipment are eligible for funding in the 2008 competition, but they should not exceed 50% of the total funding.
Applicants should provide (English or French):
• A curriculum vitae of the PI (1 page maximum), including the current research program, and a list of
significant recent publications
• A list of the project participants, with details about their contribution in the project
• A statement of proposed research, not to exceed 1500 words (3 pages of text), including the
scientific context and research question addressed, the work to be accomplished in the field and its
relevance to the research questions, the envisioned outcome of this work (publications, reports). The
proposal should make it clear that the funded research will be carried out at the Nouragues station.
• A detailed budget. For further details, please consult the Nouragues website
(http://www.nouragues.cnrs.fr).
Deadline for application: February 15th, 2008
Results of the selection process: March 15th, 2008
Applications should be sent as a single PDF file to Sylvie Aouizerate, only by email
